Cala d'Or is a well established location on the south east coast of Mallorca which has largely avoided the excesses of large scale tourism development. In the main it has developed outwards rather than upwards and is certainly nothing like the Magaluf style high rise resorts of the south coast. Cala d'Or is a treasure trove of tucked away inlets lined with sandy shores. Clusters of whitewashed buildings - like the Rocamarina Hotel - make up the resort, complete with big marinas, quaint fishing villages and buzzing beachfronts. Good things come in small packages here – even the biggest beaches are small. But there's watersports and sunbeds at all of them. Take a trip to Es Trenc, a beautiful remote beach - but be prepared for sunbathers in all their natural glory!.
The area of Cala Dor is well known for its golden coves having many to explore including, cala egos, cala gran, cala ferrera, cala dor etc. There is a mini train which is a fun way of getting around which also stops at each of the coves in the area as well as a train that takes you to Cala Mondrago which is a lovely beach and nature reserve away from the town but with all the amenities eg. toilets, bars, restaurants. Across the beach of Cala Mondrago is a path which takes you to another hidden beach round the corner called Espalmador. You could definitely enjoy a full day here.
Cala D'Or resort is popular with families and friends travelling together. The sandy beaches with their turquoise water are safe for young children. The pretty coves and attractive pine-clad surrounding countryside lend to quiet relaxing days, whereas by night the main precinct in Cala D'Or offers a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants for evening entertainment. Many sports facilities are available including tennis, sailing, horse riding, diving. Golf is available at the Vall D'or 18-hole golf course near the village of S'Horta. By night though, it's hard to better Cala d'Or. Settle at a starlit restaurant for a dinner of chargrilled fish accompanied by a fine local wine. And then live it up at the sociable, but never frenetic bars and discos, giving your day a magical finale.
Cala d'Or today is a modern purpose built resort that has grown from a small traditional Mallorcan fishing village. Over the years the resort has expanded, and now covers an area of over 4km of small sandy coves and creeks. Although in all fairness this growth has for the most part been controlled, and the town still has the feeling of a small village with few, if any, high rise buildings. The largest of these coves is called Cala Llonga, which has been developed into a large marina that effectively splits the resort in two. So, unless you are prepared for quite a long walk, or a daily ride in the tourist mini train, you may be isolated in whatever half of the town your chosen accommodation lies. Cala d'Or Marina provides the perfect backdrop whilst relaxing & enjoying your meal or having a drink, and is only a few minutes away in a taxi or for those who enjoy a stroll |
