They might be neighbours, but the two Balearic Islands of Majorca and Menorca are very different. For starters, Majorca is bigger, its towns and resorts are more developed and it has a more comprehensive road network than its smaller sister. In terms of history, the islands are also quite different. In recent times, during the Spanish Civil war, Menorca remained loyal to the Republican government, whilst Majorca fell to the Nationalists. This explains, in part, much of the underdevelopment of Menorca. The richer, dominant Nationalist government cut all ties with Menorca including financial links and the island was left to fend for itself for many years. |
Going further back, both islands share similarities. Prehistoric remains, including those from ancient civilizations such as the Minoans, can still be found in some parts of the central plains, mountains and forests. The Romans also took hold of the islands and later the Vandals, Moors and even the British, although more in Menorca than Majorca. Climate wise, despite their proximity, the two islands differ again. Majorca is the sunnier, dryer and slightly warmer island and Menorca is the windiest of all the Balearics |
Majorca’s landscape is therefore different to that of Menorca. The centre is hot, dry and dusty. The north west coast is mountainous and even gets snow during the winter, whilst the coastline is hot during the summer and mild in the wintertime. The beaches are sandy, long and numerous and the coastline is generally a lot smoother than Menorca’s. Menorca has no major mountains, but hills and plateaus punctuate the interior. There is more forest owing to the wetter climate. Book holidays to Majorca with Jet2holidays.com – package holidays you can trust. The beaches are often covered with pebbles and many areas are hard to access because of cliffs, rocks and dense forests. The natural harbour at Mao is one of the world’s deepest. |
Obviously because of the characteristics mentioned above you will get a very different holiday in Majorca compared with Menorca. If you are looking for peace and quiet, hidden coves and bays, snorkelling areas, places to kitesurf and windsurf and explore ancient ruins, Menorca is a better choice.
